Katanagatari is set in an alternative version of Japan during the Edo period. The story follows Yasuri Shichika, a swordsman who lives on an isolated island with his sister and Master Togame, a strategist from the shogunate. Master Togame hires Shichika to help her collect twelve unique swords, each with incredible powers. As they travel across Japan, they encounter various enemies and allies, uncovering the truth about the swords and their own past.
