Accel World follows Haruyuki Arita, a bullied teenager who finds solace in playing a virtual reality fighting game. One day, he is approached by the popular student council vice-president, Kuroyukihime, who offers him the opportunity to join a secret program called Brain Burst. This program allows its users to accelerate their brain waves and enter a virtual world called the Accel World. In this world, Haruyuki embarks on a journey of self-discovery and growth, facing challenges and rivalries along the way. As he becomes stronger, he learns to stand up against his bullies and embraces his role as an anti-hero.
