Hoping to alter the events of the past, a 19th century inventor instead travels 800,000 years into the future, where he finds humankind divided into two warring races. Alexander Hartdegen, a scientist living in 1899 New York City, becomes obsessed with time travel after the death of his fiancée. He successfully builds a time machine and travels to the year 802,701 AD, where he encounters the Eloi, a peaceful society that lives on the surface. However, the Eloi are also hunted by the Morlocks, a savage and monstrous race that lives underground. Alexander forms a relationship with a woman named Mara and learns about the Morlocks' hierarchy and their telepathic leader, the Über-Morlock. As Alexander tries to rescue Mara from the clutches of the Morlocks, he discovers that he is trapped in a temporal paradox and cannot alter the past without losing his reason for building the time machine. In a final confrontation with the Über-Morlock, Alexander defeats him and travels even further into the future, where he discovers a desolate wasteland dominated by the Morlocks. Accepting that he cannot change the past, Alexander returns to rescue Mara and destroys the time machine to save them from the Morlocks.
