During the 1984-1985 UK miners' strike, 11-year-old Billy Elliot discovers his passion for dance while his family struggles. Despite his father and brother being coal miners on strike, Billy secretly joins a ballet class. His dance teacher believes he has the talent to study at the Royal Ballet School. Jackie, Billy's father, initially opposes his dream fearing judgment, but later supports him. With the help of the community, Billy auditions for the school and overcomes obstacles.
