A mother, Rachel, moves to Finland with her husband and son to cope with the loss of her twin son in a car accident. Her son, Elliot, discovers a wish-granting wall and begins talking to an invisible person. As Elliot exhibits disturbing behaviors claiming to be Nathan, Rachel seeks answers from the town doctor and Helen, who reveal a satanic cult in the town. Rachel takes photographs of Elliot but finds him missing in all the pictures. She is sedated, forced into a ritual, and locked in her room. Rachel escapes and confronts her husband Anthony, who reveals that Elliot is not real, and Rachel created him as a coping mechanism. Rachel accidentally kills Anthony and tries to find Elliot in a grain silo, but he is nowhere to be found. Rachel returns to New York, still delusional and believing that Nathan, Anthony, and Elliot are alive.
Jane, a housewife, is confronted during her daily chores by Dennis, her married lover with whom she has had a long affair. Dennis tells Jane that he has to break off their relationship. She threatens suicide, but when she picks up a shish kabob skewer, the two struggle and Dennis is stabbed in the chest and collapses. Jane hides the body in the house. Before she can leave, her brother-in-law arrives and tells her that he knows about the affair and that he has invited her husband, her lover, and his wife to her house that evening so that he can tell them about the affair.
Rural policewoman Andrea wants to end her marriage and become a detective inspector in the city. After a birthday party, her drunken soon-to-be ex-husband runs out in front of her car. In a state of shock, Andrea commits a hit-and-run.
