Corporal Joe Bauers is chosen for a hibernation program but is forgotten. When he wakes up 500 years later, he discovers a dystopian world filled with moronic people. Joe must navigate this new society and find a way back to the past. Along the way, he encounters an idiocracy run by President Camacho and a corporation selling a sports drink called Brawndo. Joe's intelligence sets him apart from everyone else, leading him to become Vice President and work on improving society.

The catastrophically dry weather of 1947 causes immense problems in the countryside. In the small village Klícov, only farmers Hánek and Bervida and the old Hromádka have water. The others must queue every day for a drop for themselves and their cattle. All the villagers lament over their previous decision to turn down the cooperative chairman Kouba's proposal to built a new village water-supply system.
