Evan Treborn, who suffers from blackouts, discovers a way to remember these lost memories and alter his life by reading his journal. As he travels back in time and makes changes, he faces consequences that affect his present life. Evan's main goal is to save his childhood sweetheart from being molested by her father and tormented by her brother. However, he soon realizes that his attempts to alter the past only lead to unforeseen consequences. Eventually, he decides to scare his childhood sweetheart away and destroy all his memories to save her life. The film ends with Evan and his childhood sweetheart crossing paths after he successfully saves her life.
