Harry Caul, a private surveillance expert in San Francisco, is hired to follow and record a couple's actions. As he pieces together their conversation, he becomes increasingly concerned that harm will come to them. After a series of events, he discovers the couple's involvement in the murder of his employer. Consumed by paranoia, Caul demolishes his apartment in search of a bug planted by the couple. Unable to find it, he resumes playing his saxophone.
