Affable hillbillies Tucker and Dale are on vacation at their dilapidated mountain cabin when they are mistaken for murderers by a group of preppy college students. When one of the students, Allison, accidentally slips and hits her head, Tucker and Dale rescue her and take her back to their cabin, hoping her friends will come to pick her up. However, the college students misinterpret the situation and believe that Allison is being held captive. Chad, the leader of the group, decides to fight back against the supposed hillbilly killers, leading to a series of comical misunderstandings and accidental deaths. In the end, the truth is revealed and Tucker, Dale, and Allison are able to peacefully resolve the situation.

The film explores the difficult questions faced by parents and doctors: whether to medically delay puberty, start hormonal treatment, or wait and risk worsening the teens’ suffering. Through moments of doubt, upheaval and hope, the documentary offers an intimate look at three young people who want only one thing — for the outside world to see them as they know themselves to be.
