But not everything goes according to plan. During the outbreak of the rage virus in England, Don and his wife, Alice, hide in a country house with four other people. Don abandons Alice to save himself. Twenty eight weeks later, the infected have all starved to death. An American-led NATO force allows the return of English citizens who had been abroad during the outbreak. Among them are Don and Alice's children, Tammy and Andy. Everyone lives in the Green Zone, a secured area on the Isle of Dogs in London. Don manages one of the apartment buildings in the zone. Tammy and Andy decide to sneak out into London and visit their old home to retrieve personal items. There, Andy discovers Alice in the attic, delirious but alive. The NATO soldiers take Alice back to the Green Zone. Scarlet, an Army medical officer, discovers that Alice is a carrier of the virus. She orders Alice's execution, but Don, infected with the virus, kills Alice and escapes into the Green Zone. Realizing that Alice's children might hold the secret to curing the virus, Scarlet rescues Tammy and Andy. The Army herds the residents of the Green Zone into safe rooms, but Don attacks the crowd and spreads the virus. Andy escapes through an air vent. Scarlett and Tammy make it into a storehouse with a few others and plan to escape the city with the help of a friendly helicopter pilot. They make it to a park and rest, then continue their journey to Wembley Stadium, where they will meet the pilot and fly to safety. They dodge the infected and soldiers killing the infected, until they are separated on the way to the stadium. Don appears and kills Scarlet, but Tammy shoots him and saves Andy. The children meet the pilot, who flies them across the English Channel to safety. However, the virus has now been transported off the British island, posing a new threat to humanity.
