After the suicide of their teacher, a classroom of students in Montreal must learn to cope with the loss and trauma. Monsieur Lazhar, an Algerian immigrant, steps in as a substitute teacher and helps the students through their healing process. As he becomes invested in their lives, Lazhar also confronts his own tragic past.
