In 19th-century New York, Catherine Sloper is a shy and sheltered young woman living with her wealthy and domineering father. Catherine's life takes a turn when she falls in love with a charming suitor, but her father disapproves and tries to sabotage the relationship, leading Catherine to question her own worth and future.
