Set on a Pacific island during a heavy rainstorm, a group of people seek refuge in a general store. An American missionary, fearing the effects of the rampant immorality, tries to convert a prostitute. Their clash leads to a tragic outcome.

Sadie Thompson, a woman from San Francisco, is on the run and ends up in Pago Pago. She becomes the center of controversy and seduction as a reformer tries to save her from a marine sergeant's lust. Based on a play and a short story, the film explores themes of prostitution, religion, and the moral struggles of a fallen woman.

Faulke, a swindling white trader who persuaded Madge to leave Captain Blackbird, insists that her daughter, Lorna, marry Waki, a native leader, although Lorna loves Lloyd Warren. While in search of a doll for his other daughter, Baby Madge, Captain Blackbird comes to Pago Pago and gruffly refuses to aid Lloyd and Lorna, whom he does not recognize. A chance encounter with Faulke, however, reveals the trader's evil doings and Lorna's identity. The captain and his men rush to the island and rescue Lorna from the warring natives.
