Ordet tells the story of a family in rural Denmark in the 1920s who are deeply divided by their differing religious beliefs. When the daughter-in-law experiences a problem pregnancy, their faith and belief in miracles are put to the ultimate test.

Life in the African country of Mali in the 1990s is vividly highlighted in this mild drama. In the story, a young forest ranger who sees that his work holds the key to the future of his country (through reforestation) is disgusted at the short-sighted, money-grubbing ways of his superiors. He has a much better relationship with local villagers than with his agency's bosses. As the movie opens, the villagers are preparing to hold a hunting ceremony but are not sure whether they will do it the old fashioned way, with a bonfire, or will obey a government decree that open fires are too dangerous. There is a lot of sexual teasing between the villagers, including some harmless horseplay. For instance, when a man whispers another woman's name in his sleep, his wife pours water into his ear in revenge.

In a small desert village, children go missing and a broken mirror holds the key to a hidden treasure. A teacher and a group of villagers embark on a journey to find the treasure, facing mystical challenges along the way.

Azucena is 22 years old and lives with her mother, who, due to a past trauma, can no longer speak. Azucena works in a photography lab with her best friend Paqui, and has just broken up with her latest boyfriend Dani. Azucena lives in fear of sex and physical contact, hiding in her own sheltered world. Cesar, a plastic artist feels an obsessive attraction for Azucena, as a result, making her his inspiration. This obsession is painfully observed by Jacinto, the unstable artist's lover, who is himself involved in a violent and destructive relationship with Cesar.

Tensions abound in the relationships featured in the three episodes which make up the film - that between two young children and their stepfather, a cripple setting off alone on a pilgrimage without the company of his fellow villagers, and a teacher returning to his remote village and finding himself the subject of unrealistic expectations of the other villagers.
