A grieving family is plagued by tragic and disturbing occurrences after the death of their 78-year-old grandmother. As Annie, the mother and an artist, delves into researching apparitions, strange events begin to unfold. Her teenage son, Peter, attends a party that ends in tragedy when his younger sister, Charlie, is decapitated. As Annie becomes obsessed with a grief counseling support group, she encounters Joan, who guides her towards conducting a séance. However, Annie unwittingly summons a malevolent spirit that possesses her and threatens her family. Annie discovers that her mother and Joan were part of a coven dedicated to conjuring the demon Paimon, and realizes that her family has been cursed. In a desperate attempt to save her son, Annie burns Charlie's sketchbook and unintentionally causes her husband, Steve, to spontaneously combust. Peter, now possessed, witnesses his mother's descent into madness before fleeing to the attic. In the attic, he discovers the truth about his family's dark secret and ultimately succumbs to possession. The story ends with Peter being crowned as Paimon in a tree house filled with members of the coven, including the decapitated head of Charlie.
