Diana Christensen, the head of the network's programming department, cuts a deal with a group of radical terrorists for a new docudrama series. Beale's ratings eventually top out, and Christensen offers to help develop the show. She begins an affair with Beale's friend, Max Schumacher, who is also an UBS executive. When Schumacher decides to end Beale's show, Christensen convinces Frank Hackett, another UBS executive, to move the show under the entertainment division. The show becomes the most highly rated program on television, and Beale becomes a celebrity preaching his message of anger. Max and Diana's romance initially suffers, but they eventually reconcile. However, in the flush of high ratings, Max leaves Diana and warns her that she will self-destruct. When Beale discovers that the network will be bought out by a larger conglomerate, he launches an on-screen tirade against the deal. The top brass panic because of the company's debt load, but Beale is taken to meet with the chairman of the conglomerate who persuades him to abandon his populist messages. But Beale's new sermons depress the audiences, and ratings begin to slide. The network executives decide to hire a group of terrorists to assassinate Beale on the air. The assassination succeeds, putting an end to his show and paving the way for a new season of programming.
