The Cowboy Way is a movie about two cowboys, Pepper Lewis and Sonny Gilstrap, who travel from New Mexico to New York City to rescue a friend's daughter from human traffickers. Along the way, they encounter various comedic and action-packed situations.
Jonathan Pride is a mild-mannered dance instructor in 1820 Boston. En route to visit relatives, Jonathan is shanghaied by a band of zany pirates and forced to work as a galley boy. When the pirate vessel arrives at the port of Las Palomas, Jonathan, clad in buccaneer's garb, makes his escape. Everyone in Las Palomas, including Governor Alcalde (Frank Morgan) and fetching senorita Serafina (Steffi Duna), assumes that Jonathan is the pirate chieftain, leading to a series of typical comic-opera complications.

A group of homeless teenagers want to rent the place and start what they hope will be a profitable business, but a gang threatens to shut it down. A boxer offers $50 to anyone who can stay in the ring with him for an entire minute. Larry, through a series of mix-ups--including hitting the boxer in the face with a tomato--winds up in the ring with him but, with the aid of some strategically placed horseshoes, manages to knock the boxer out. When he comes to and finds out what happened, the outraged boxer sets out after Larry.
Sweet Nell is the jewel of Dry Gulch and all of the eligible bachelors seek her hand. The townsfolk are willing to shoot any stranger who casts aspersions on her honor - and rule it a legal suicide. The men are crestfallen when she chooses Dick to be her beau. A jealous suitor frames the lucky cowpoke for murder.

Pokes is a sport when his wife is not around - when she is, he is meekness itself. A game is going on at the club and Pokes is phoned for, but his wife gets the message and Pokes is sent to bed. Jabs, the policeman, is a sweetheart of Jennie, the maid, and calls for his daily refreshments. Meanwhile Mrs. Pokes has gone out and Pokes wanders into the kitchen. He sees Jabs' coat and hat and hastily donning them escapes to the club. Getting back is more difficult, however, but after exciting experiences with several cops and a burglar, Pokes manages to get home, only to be confronted by Mrs. Pokes. The bold story he tells fails to convince his irate wife, who proceeds to massage him with a wooden lower extremity. Pokes is now studying the game of "Old Maid" and trying to learn to tell the truth and once more make friends with his wife.
The worthless son of a rich man spends most of his time in jail. His father throws a pen at a map telling him wherever the pen sticks he must go and make his fortune. The pen lands on the kingdom of Guatamazela. He arrives and is attracted by a pretty girl, who turns out to be the Princess. A revolution breaks out and Al takes refuge in the room of the Princess. When he hears men coming he dons her clothes. But the revolutionists succeed and come to hang the Princess. His identity is discovered when the Palace Guards see him, and thinking he is the Princess, rescue him. The captain recognizes him and wants to shoot him. He finally eludes them all, rescues the Princess and all is well.
The prospector enters the western dance hall, and upon seeing the gambler, takes a mallet and apparently kills the man. He is captured by the posse and as he is dangling from a tree tells the story of how, years before, he and Ben had been in Texas together, Ben fleecing Rube of all his savings, robbed him of his girl, and disappeared. As Rube is about to breathe his last word, a message comes to the effect that Ben has recovered. The posse cut Rube down and take him back. He discovers that the girl is still with Ben and is the mother of seven urchins. Ben tries to rid himself of this domestic burden, but Rube flees on his trick mule and has the last laugh on the gambler.
