One year after meeting, Tom proposes to his girlfriend, Violet, but unexpected events keep tripping them up as they look to walk down the aisle together. Tom surprises Violet with a ring and proposes on New Year's Eve, but their plans are constantly disrupted. Tom is a sous chef and Violet is pursuing a post-doctoral assignment in social psychology, which puts a strain on their relationship. They decide to postpone their wedding when Violet is accepted into the University of Michigan. Tom moves to Michigan with her and takes a job at a local deli, while Violet thrives in her academic pursuits. As they face comical challenges and the pressure of a long engagement, they question whether their relationship can survive.

Mark can't believe his luck when he finds himself back at Cassie's place, after just meeting at a party earlier in the night.
