In a dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions: Abnegation (the selfless), Amity (the peaceful), Candor (the honest), Dauntless (the brave), and Erudite (the intelligent). Beatrice Prior (Shailene Woodley) was born into Abnegation, which runs the government. Her father, Andrew Prior (Tony Goldwyn), serves on the ruling council along with the head of Abnegation, Marcus Eaton (Ray Stevenson). Beatrice takes an aptitude test which shows whether she is Abnegation, Candor, Dauntless, Erudite, or -- the worst fate imaginable -- Factionless. To the surprise of everyone, Beatrice is Divergent (shows traits of multiple factions). However, her results are inconclusive, and her examiner, Tori (Maggie Q), records her result as Abnegation. Beatrice's brother, Caleb (Ansel Elgort), chooses Erudite. After the test, they go to the Choosing Ceremony. Beatrice decides to leave Abnegation and join Dauntless, a faction that has always fascinated her. Caleb chooses Erudite. Before the choosing ceremony, Beatrice visits Caleb in Erudite. She doesnt know the Erudite plans to overthrow Abnegation. When they arrive at the Dauntless compound, Beatrice changes her name to Tris and befriends another initiate, Christina (Zo Kravitz). Tris has feelings for one of the leaders of the Dauntless faction, a mysterious man named Four (Theo James), whom makes her feel like she's not alone. Beatrice/Tris first goes through a training period with other initiates where they learn combat, weaponry, and brutal physical fitness. Then they go through a series of tests and simulations designed to initiate them into their new faction. After everyone passes, the initiates then attend a ceremony where they are ranked from 1-10 out of all the initiates. At the ceremony, Tris is ranked 1st, while Peter (Miles Teller) is ranked last and 5th is where you're factionless, or without a faction. Eric (Jai Courtney) the sadistic leader of the Dauntless initiates another game where you can gain more points back, thus taking them from other initiates. After Tris gets a good score, Four is suspicious that she had outside help and asks her to explain herself. Tris lies, says it was just instinct. One night, Tris starts sleepwalking and the next day is told that she's so low on the ranking board she's going to be cut from the program altogether. However Eric approaches her and tells her that he did it to test her, she still had to pretend like he cut her though. Eric then tells her that she can either be cut from the program, becoming factionless, or she can become a Dauntless member, but the memories have to stay behind. Tris attends the Choosing Ceremony for the Dauntless initiates, but before she chooses, she sees her brother, Caleb. She follows him because he has Divergent books, then she runs into Four. Caleb ratting her out is why Eric had her play as if she got cut. She goes back and tells Tori about the manipulation. The next day, the first task for the stages of initiation begins. It involves the initiates jumping from a moving train onto a roof then jumping into a hole to slide down into the Dauntless headquarters. Tris doesnt want to jump at first, but she and the other initiates, including Four, all jump from the train. Back inside, they go through rooms that each have a test. Tris's tests often make her second guess if shes courageous enough. On her final test of serums, Four pulls rankings that allows him to test Tris himself. Through the pain simulation, Tris obtains ranks that can not be obtained theoretically, given her mental capacity and side effects to strain her lung and heart. During the final test, Tris confronts her biggest fears in a fear landscape. She is shown crows eating a dead body and Four kills a man in front of her. It's revealed that Four starts as one of the 25 initiates that tried to join Dauntless, but half don't make it past the first day. Dauntless initiation is much harder than in other factions. In the Dauntless compound, they have a fear simulation serum. Its called an aptitude test: you drink it, go into hallucinations and walk through fears in your mind. She learns that Four (or Tobias as she finds out is his real name) is also Divergent, which means he had an aptitude for different factions, but he hid it to stay safe from Jeanine Matthews (Kate Winslet), the Erudite leader who hunts Divergents. Christina figures out that Peter, Drew (Ben Lamb) and Al (Christian Madsen) are the youngest Dauntless members (16 yrs old) who will be monitoring the final test. Tris finds out she has to fight one of her best friends during the final test but what Tris doesn't know is that her friend Al is carrying a knife, when the simulation starts he stabs her and says he was told that if he kills her, his place in Dauntless would be secure. After the attack, she finds out later that Al wasn't egged on by the Dauntless leaders but by Eric. Will (Ben Lloyd-Hughes), who is also one of Tris friends, shoots Will's body with the guns from on top the building which then lets Will fall off the side of the building. Even though Tris is attacked by Al, she still made 1st and her attacker 20th. Tris goes to see a hallucination of her younger brother and finds out that the simulation serum wasnt what Jeanine wanted but rather the final part of Tobias's Dauntless initiation. Tobias and Tris also kiss after all. Tris is a Divergent and into the next film they go undercover with the Factionless as well as learn more about the box.
