Grossly overweight yet good-hearted professor Sherman Klump takes a special chemical that turns him into the slim but obnoxious Buddy Love. Sherman falls in love with Carla, a chemistry graduate student. However, his alter ego Buddy begins to take over and uses Sherman's work to impress a wealthy alumnus. Buddy's aggressive behavior and womanizing ways cause problems, and Sherman must fight to regain control of his body and prove himself to Carla and the others.

In this modern retelling of Goethe's Faust, a man named Heinrich Faust, dissatisfied with his life and thirsting for knowledge, makes a pact with the devil. As Faust indulges in pleasures and gains great knowledge, he slowly loses his humanity and descends into darkness.

The movie makers are filming the next installment of the western serial "Get Your Man". The movie's leading man wants his stunt double to do the next dangerous stunt. Purely by accident, a hapless, cross-eyed aspiring actor named Joe Magee ends up doing the stunt perfectly. He ends up doing dangerous stunt after stunt, all by accident, that fit the movie so perfectly that the movie's leading lady wants him in the picture. The exasperated director finds that getting Joe to do the stunts on command is an entirely different story.
