Attorney William Beachum discovers that the brilliant engineer Crawford is his opponent in a battle to prosecute him for shooting his wife. As Beachum prepares for the trial, he becomes entangled in a web of deceit and manipulation. During the trial, Crawford acts as his own attorney, revealing that the arresting officer was having an affair with his wife. Beachum discovers that the murder weapon found at Crawford's home was switched by Crawford himself. With new evidence, Beachum confronts Crawford and tricks him into confessing. Crawford is arrested, and a new trial begins.
