In 1939, an archaeologist in Suffolk, England begins a major excavation of a burial mound on a wealthy widow's land. The dig attracts worldwide attention as it uncovers an ancient Anglo-Saxon ship burial. As the dig progresses, personal and political tensions arise, and the characters confront their own desires and motivations. The excavation ultimately reveals the extraordinary story buried beneath the mounds.
