A group of male friends become obsessed with five mysterious sisters who are sheltered by their strict, religious parents in suburban Detroit in the mid 1970s. The story takes place in affluent Grosse Pointe, Michigan, in 1974, as four neighborhood boys reflect on their neighbors, the five Lisbon sisters. The film begins with the suicide attempt of the youngest sister, Cecilia, as she slits her wrist in a bath. The family therapist Dr. Horniker suggests that Cecilia may have a problem with feeling neglected and advises her parents to pay more attention to her and their other children. After Cecilia's death, the Lisbon parents become even more overprotective, isolating their daughters from the community. Lux, one of the sisters, forms a secret relationship with the school heartthrob Trip Fontaine, but he abandons her after having sex. The sisters are then punished and confined to their house. Lux continues to have anonymous sexual encounters on the roof of the house. The boys across the street, who are obsessed with the sisters, eventually discover that all the sisters have killed themselves in a suicide pact. Devastated, their parents flee the neighborhood, and the community acts as if the Lisbon family never existed. The boys are left haunted by the mystery of the Lisbon sisters' suicides and will spend the rest of their lives trying to unravel it.
