A Los Angeles insurance representative lets an alluring housewife seduce him into a scheme of insurance fraud and murder that arouses the suspicion of his colleague, an insurance investigator. The story follows Walter Neff, a successful insurance salesman, who meets the seductive Phyllis Dietrichson during a routine house call. Phyllis persuades Neff to help her kill her husband in order to collect the insurance money. They come up with a plan to make it look like an accident, resulting in the insurance company having to pay double the normal amount. However, their scheme is investigated by Neff's colleague Barton Keyes, who starts to suspect foul play. As the investigation unfolds, secrets are revealed and Neff must find a way to cover his tracks and protect himself from the consequences of his actions.
