During World War II, U.S. Marine Private Robert Witt is AWOL and living with Melanesian natives. He is found and imprisoned but later joins his unit. The soldiers of C Company, 25th Infantry Division, land on Guadalcanal and prepare to take Hill 210, a key Japanese position. The soldiers face heavy resistance, and tensions arise among them. Captain Staros and Lieutenant Colonel Tall clash over a frontal assault on the Japanese bunker. The men eventually succeed in taking the bunker and are rewarded with leave. Private Bell receives a letter from his wife, who wants a divorce. Captain Staros is relieved of command and offered a position in Washington, D.C. The soldiers continue their patrols and encounter a Japanese column, resulting in the death of Private Coombs and Private Witt. The company receives a new commanding officer, Captain Bosche, and eventually leaves Guadalcanal.
