The Great Ziegfeld is a musical biographical film about Florenz Ziegfeld Jr., a Broadway impresario known for his lavish stage productions and his promotion of showgirls. The film follows Ziegfeld's rise to fame, his tumultuous relationships with his wife Anna Held and actress Billie Burke, and the financial crisis that threatens his theatrical empire. Three sailors, Gabey, Chip, and Ozzie, have 24 hours in New York City to find love and adventure before their ship departs. Gabey falls for a poster showcasing Ivy Smith, a beautiful woman he believes to be Miss Turnstiles. Chip meets Hildy, an anthropologist he falls for instantly. Ozzie, on the other hand, finds himself being pursued by Claire, a taxi driver. The sailors explore various parts of the city, including Coney Island, the Empire State Building, and the Statue of Liberty, all while pursuing their respective romantic interests.

Josh doesn't like the way things go at home and decides to quit and get out. Later, his wife gets what purports to be his farewell letter, which is intended to lead her to believe he has committed suicide. He, however, goes to New York to have a good time, and he does, "by gosh." The wife, believing herself a widow, makes a trip to New York with her admirer. Well, you may guess the rest.
