In 1940s Colorado, a young woman's life takes an unexpected turn when she becomes pregnant out of wedlock and is forced into an arranged marriage with a stranger. As she adjusts to her new life as a farmer's wife, she navigates the challenges of rural living, the strained relationship with her husband, and the arrival of a German POW who brings an element of danger and romance into her life.
One Christmas Eve, a carefree young man, Eric, arrives in a small provincial town. Here, he meets Julien, a bar pianist who is his exact double. Julien is in love with Marinette, a pretty waitress, but he is too shy to make any romantic overtures. Eric decides to give the course of true love a helping hand by pretending to be Julien. Having just moved to a new town, widow Elaine Freedman and her teenage daughter Justine are greeted by the effusive, terribly nice Dr. Calvin Lawrence. Sensing that Justine is bit testy and out of sorts, Dr. Lawrence recommends that she begin taking a special vitamin which he manufactures in his own home.
