After being abandoned by his wife, a Polish hairdresser seeks revenge and plots to get rich by faking his own death.

The plot spans nearly 30 years and tells the story of a poor boy from the northeast, "Xiao Bao", who follows his village's hairdresser, "Er Ge" (Sha Yi), to Shenzhen, a special zone. The two are forced to take care of the baby, and then they meet up with a cold-hearted young woman named Ma Lu (Ma Li).

Unemployed car salesman Peter is encouraged by his girlfriend Cynthia to approach the head of a petrol company with his plan for making petrol stations more attractive to customers. When the man rejects the idea Peter joins a rival company and becomes a great success.
