Speak tells the story of Melinda Sordino, a teenage girl who becomes an outcast in her high school after calling the police to a house party. The reason for her call is only revealed later in the movie, when it is disclosed that she was raped by a senior boy at the party. Unable to speak up about the assault, Melinda retreats into silence and isolation, until she finds the strength to confront her trauma and regain her voice.
