Chris, a young African-American, visits his white girlfriend's parents for the weekend. As he becomes increasingly uncomfortable with their reception of him, he discovers a disturbing secret that puts his life in danger.
Craig Schwartz, an unsuccessful puppeteer, discovers a portal that allows him to enter the mind of actor John Malkovich. He soon becomes obsessed with the experience, as does his wife Lotte. When the portal is discovered by their co-worker Maxine, they start a business offering others the chance to experience Malkovich. As Schwartz and Lotte's relationship falls apart, Maxine falls in love with Malkovich, unaware that it is actually Schwartz inside. Meanwhile, Dr. Lester, the owner of the portal, plans to use Malkovich's body as a host for himself and his friends. Schwartz ultimately decides to remain inside Malkovich indefinitely, but faces a series of challenges as Dr. Lester and his friends try to force him out. The story culminates in a plot twist involving Maxine and Lotte's relationship, and Schwartz finding himself trapped inside the body of Maxine and Lotte's daughter.
