A scientist named Paul Talbot discovers a rare hormone found in the pineal gland of a woman from an African tribe. He experiments with the hormone and develops a formula that can reverse aging. However, the side effects of the formula include a murderous transformation. Talbot's wife, June, becomes frustrated with their failing marriage and secretly takes the formula herself. She turns into an old woman and goes on a killing spree, using her newfound youth and strength to murder her husband and others. In the end, Talbot discovers the truth and manages to stop June, but not before suffering a fatal injury.
On Christmas Eve, a couple poses as husband and wife to take care of an adopted son while dealing with debt and deception. They navigate through various challenges and create a heartwarming family atmosphere.

The story is set in the village of Oskaloosa, which is in Iowa -- Langdon's home state. A silent movie-style opening title informs us that the town needs a new fire engine, so they decide to stage a play to raise the money. (Nothing more is heard about this, but the finale involves a fire emergency at the theater.) In the opening scene the community players rehearse at the home of the director, a pompous lady named Mrs. Winters. Harry, of course, is The Stage Hand.
