The Happiness of the Katakuris is a dark comedy musical about the Katakuris, a family running a guesthouse in the mountains. They encounter a series of mysterious events that disrupt their lives. A group of hip friends gather at a Gothic castle owned by a wheelchair- bound older relative of one of the girls. One couple in the group, unbeknownst to the others, is smuggling heroin in some Chinese artifacts the protagonist has brought back from the Orient to give to her elderly relative. Meanwhile the deranged uncle of the protagonist, who supposedly killed the protagonist's mother (his own sister) and cut out her eyes, is wandering the catacombs spying on everyone. When one of the guests is murdered and her eyes subsequently disappear, suspicion naturally falls on the mad uncle. But is he being set up?
In this stop-motion animation, the Sandman is depicted as a trickster creature lurking in the shadows, instilling fear of darkness in innocent victims. With symbolism and visual metaphors, the film explores themes of fear, darkness, and the power of imagination. The story follows a mouse who encounters the Sandman and goes on a dark and eerie adventure through a scary house, encountering various creatures and legends along the way. The film is brought to life through stunning puppet animation and claymation, inspired by the German Expressionism movement.

Herman the Mouse takes his cousins to the museum where they encounter Katnip the cat who chases them all over the museum, but becoming batter and bruised as he tries to catch and outwit Herman. But Herman out-maneuvers Katnip who, worse for wear, snakes off in defeat.
