A working-class Italian-American bouncer named Tony Lip becomes the driver for an African-American classical pianist named Don Shirley on a tour through the racially segregated American South in the 1960s. Despite their initial clashes and cultural differences, Tony begins to admire Don's talent and is appalled by the discrimination and threats Don faces.
