The Galactic Republic is in crisis as a separatist movement led by Count Dooku threatens the peace. Senator Padmé Amidala narrowly escapes an assassination attempt and is put under the protection of Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi and his apprentice Anakin Skywalker. Anakin and Padmé spend time together on Naboo, where Anakin's mother is kidnapped and killed. Obi-Wan investigates the murder attempt and discovers a secret clone army being developed in Kamino. Anakin and Padmé are captured on Geonosis, and a large battle erupts between the Republic's clone forces and the Separatists' droid army.
