In the early 1900s, an aging gunfighter named J.B. Books returns to Carson City, Nevada, with the knowledge that he has terminal cancer. Determined to die with dignity, he seeks out a doctor who confirms his diagnosis and prescribes laudanum to manage his pain. While Books tries to make arrangements for his own death, he forms unexpected relationships with a widow and her son. As his health deteriorates, Books is faced with a decision on how he wants to be remembered.
