In Smart Alecks, a group of friends find themselves caught up in a web of comedic and criminal misadventures. From tap dancing to playing harmonica, they use their unique skills to navigate situations involving brain operations, contaminated food, and baseball. The mysterious Mr. Steinmetz has acquired the ability to create things and beings by will alone. Only, after a while his creations invariably disappear. He therefore approaches a famous brain surgeon, Max Holst, who he hopes can help him with this problem. When Max refuses, Steinmetz brings his doppelgänger into being to replace him.

A mother attempts to pull the plug of her comatose daughter and as a result, she is being sued by her aristocratic mother-in-law.

After a medical experiment goes awry, a neurologist's personality changes and he becomes involved in a series of comedic and dramatic situations. Along the way, he deals with his relationships with his father, patients, and the new version of himself.
