A chronicle of life in a small village in the Baikal Region on the eve of World War I and at the time of the October Revolution. The age-old foundations are crumbling, the process of social stratification is underway and, as a result, some people go to defend the revolution, and others - to fight against it. The main hero is the young Cossack Roman Ulybin. At first, this carefree daredevil is preoccupied only with one problem: whether his sweetheart, Dashutka, is to marry him or a merchant’s son, Alyoshka. Roman is killing time fist-fighting with his rival. But little by little, the young man realizes that the world around him has changed, that people are fighting for equality and social justice, and, being a real Cossack, he can’t remain on the sidelines…

The adopted daughter of Dr. Skvortsov, Tanya, having learned that her mother Natalya Avdeyevna is alive, who was considered dead during the bombing of World War II, decides to go to her in a distant village on vacation. She recognizes the woman who gave her life and lost her husband and sons due to the war, but cannot call her mother. Meetings on the collective farm with interesting people make Tanya think a lot and experience a lot. She discovers for herself a completely new, largely alien world to her. It does not immediately penetrate the sense of inner kinship with this world, its people, so unusual for her.

In this provocative Soviet drama, an aged couple are left homeless after their farm burns down, and they head off to live with their impoverished daughter. When they arrive, they are appalled to learn that she has abandoned her child and husband to run away with a married man. The husband is now an alcoholic, so the grandparents stay on to support their son-in-law in his time of need and to help care for their grandson. Later, the errant daughter is dumped by her lover and returns. Many fights ensue until the grandfather banishes his troublesome daughter from their lives.

By chance, two middle-aged people met - the telephone operator of the hotel Lina and the chief engineer of the construction department Kirillov, who had arrived on official business from Leningrad in one of the provincial cities of the country. Behind everyone has setbacks in family life. A sincere feeling that brought two lonely people closer together helped to see those around them in a new way. They are already over forty. Both are lonely. Having met by chance and fell in love with each other, they never became happy.
