Along their journey, the mariner warms up to Enola and teaches her to swim. They encounter various challenges, including an underwater trip to gather dirt and the destruction of their boat by the Smokers. Eventually, they find refuge with a new group of survivors on a makeshift atoll. Determined to rescue Enola and stop the Deacon from finding Dryland, the mariner boards the oil tanker Exxon Valdez. He threatens to drop a flare into the oil reserve tank unless the Deacon releases Enola, resulting in the ship's explosion. The mariner saves Enola by bungee jumping and they join the others on the balloon-driven towards Dryland. They discover that Dryland is Mount Everest, where they begin a new civilization, while the mariner decides to sail off into the ocean, his home.
