Mr Vang, a clerk, has just moved into the fourth floor of a block of flats – and he has already gained a reputation as something of a troublemaker. The woman, a professor’s wife, who lives just below his flat has so far only been indirectly acquainted with him in the form of stomping feet and noise lasting into the small hours. She hopes to meet him face to face soon so that she can give him a thorough talking-to – and her wish is about to come true in a quite unexpected way. However, Anna’s younger brother witnesses one of their secret meetings and tattles to their father, who immediately breaks up the rendezvous and dismisses Hans. The farmer has other plans: he intends to rid himself of debt by marrying Anna off to a wealthy local farmer. Hans and Anna part ways with heavy hearts, vowing eternal fidelity.
