A Ship Bound for India follows the journey of a ship sailing to India in 1947. Onboard, a diverse group of individuals with their own secrets and desires converge. Among them are a sailor, a hunchback, and a man with a complicated father-son relationship. As the ship makes its way through various obstacles, tensions rise and unexpected connections are formed.

Christer Berg dies in a car crash and is found with a teddy bear named "Bamse". His son, also named Christer finds out that Bamse belongs to his father's lover Barbro Persson. He tries to humiliate her, introducing her to his mother as his new fiancée. But he ends up falling in love with her, and she sees in him the memories of her dead lover. When she finds herself pregnant, they have to decide about their love affair.

Marianne is not satisfied with her job at a farm and dreams of moving to the big city. When she finally decides to go she is robbed on arrival. Two older gentlemen decide to help her avoid the dangers of the city.
