The Iron Horse tells the story of the construction of the intercontinental railroad in 19th century America. At the outbreak of the War Between the States, Maryland Calvert is loved by Maj. Alan Kendrick, son of a Virginia general, and Capt. Fulton Thorpe. Nancy, whom Thorpe has loved unwisely, follows him to Washington and commits suicide when she learns he will not marry her; as a result, Alan is forced to request his resignation. When Fort Sumter is fired upon, Alan, who admires Lincoln's principles, joins the Union Army though his father is among the Secessionist leaders; as a result, he is estranged from Maryland. Thorpe, who has joined the Confederacy as a spy, is responsible for Alan's arrest, but Maryland victoriously comes to his aid by ringing the alarm bell.

Phillip Haver, who, along with his friend Toby Jones, finds David Ainslee dying in the desert. After rustlers stole his cattle, Ainslee went off in search of a lost mine and fell victim to a killer. Before he kicks the bucket, Ainslee hands Haver a poke of gold dust to pay off the mortgage on the ranch.

Medicine Man Doctor Cutter and his Indian partner arrive in a town where mysterious stage robberies have occurred. Money goes out in a locked strongbox but at the destination the still locked strongbox is opened only to find the money missing and the stage was not held up. Using binoculars to watch the next stage carrying money, Cutter sees how the money is removed and he and his partner now set out to bring in the outlaws and recover the money.

The plucky boy rider Red discovers the dead body of Jim Crawford in the desert. A message scratched on a canteen begs the finder to protect Jim's daughter Ann from the killer, Luke Matthews.
