A group of policemen look over three murder cases including a cutthroat that prays on young women, a madman that hid his deformed landlord's corpse in the floor, and a wine aficionado who buries his friend alive.

Alain Marchal, wrongly accused of murdering his wife, escapes from prison the day before his execution. Before committing suicide, he contacts Monsieur Charles, a retired gangster, and asks him to investigate, find the real culprit and clear his name. Monsieur Charles accepts his request and along with his wife Ginette and two former accomplices, Paragraphe and Teddy Coffre fort, embarks on his counter-investigation.

Emile is a steelworker in a car factory ;a confirmed bachelor going on fifty, he leads a peaceful life .One night, he is woken up by a burst of machine gun fire. The Dombreval troupe is the last vestige of an outdated form of entertainment: the traveling theatre. Mireille is the director, strong, courageous, but overwhelmed by the hardships and financial difficulties. Full of dignity, she refuses negotiations and compromises, confronting all with determination. The end is however near, Mireille is aware of it.

François, a young student at a provincial college, likes Colette, the daughter of the headmaster. Turlot his colleague, who commits suicide, left a diary where he writes of his relationship with Colette.

A village lost in the mountains where Catherine called L'Airelle's love affair takes place with a young doctor. Catherine's father is the local bonesetter whose wife threw herself into a glacier out of despair of love and whose body reappears intact twenty years later. In addition, the pharmacist of the country is accused of having seduced a young girl who is avenged by her mother. The bonesetter also dies, the village fortunately continues to live.

A devoted switchboard operator is the village guardian angel.

Mustapha, a cab driver in Paris, charges a customer in a hurry, without realizing that he is in a hurry to escape his pursuers after robbing a jewelry store. The next day, reading the newspapers, Mustapha becomes aware of the role he has played in this affair, and would gladly assist the police if a fortuitous incident didn't make him fear the criminals' vengeance. It's a cruel dilemma in which he is both suspected by some and threatened by others. Weak but honest, he manages to get out of this predicament at the risk of his life!

The Donadieu family lives in the Provençal sun in a happy letting go, The father, the mother, the son and the three daughters. One of them, Claire, falls in love with a mountain dweller, Chapus, whom she marries Chapus, rough and austere, undertakes to educate the Donadieu family. The joy disappears and only returns in the absence of Chapus.
