Au Bonheur des Dames (1930) is a comedic drama that explores the growth of a department store and the rampage of progress. Based on the novel of the same name, the movie depicts the story of a model who gets caught up in the changing times and the consequences of industrialization.

The comparison is unfair: Dreyer was an artist, but director Marco de Gastyne certainly proved himself a distinguished craftsman, and his emphasis on the Maid of Orléans early life in Domrémy serves as a picturesque, matching bookend to Dreyer's impassioned courtroom drama.
