Orvar is a vagabond, walking the country roads and living on sunshine and generosity. One day he decides to find work somewhere to get some money. He becomes a helping hand for seven lumberjack brothers. The big and strong brothers really enjoy themselves, joking with the small and meek Orvar. Orvar does not know that he has inherited a large fortune but the seven brothers do and they begin to treat him with the greatest courtesy. They convince him to write his last will, making them his heirs, and then begin to make plans on how to kill him.

The farmer Per Jonsson doesn't think too well about the factory in the neighborhood, since he thinks that it destroys the fishing and makes the young people leave the countryside. When the workers at the factory go on strike, they ask him to sell milk to them and let them work in his forest. But Jonsson is stubborn and refuses to give them any help at all. At least until he is in an accident and also need help.

Three city kids are taken somewhat reluctantly to a farm out in the forests of Sweden. There they meet the resident country kids who's rosy cheeks and youthful antics mirror the apathy and cynicism of the children grown up in the callous and barren streets of the city. In the country, strange and mysterious things are afoot. Sudden fires, cars braking down and enigmatic sightings point to there being more than the modern man fathoms in the woods. People talk of trolls and beings in the woods, guardians of the land, but the grown ups do not believe and the cynical city children say such talk is nonsense.

The young Anders is in love with Marit, whose father, the farmer Bjur-Erik opposes their relation. He watches jealously his daughter and becomes furious when he hears that she sneaks off to see Anders.

A young man comes to Stockholm, Sweden and experiences several bizarre and surrealistic situations.
