In a barren land ruled by oppression and ignorance, a spirited woman driven by hope of a better life must fight against the odds. Agnes is a servant in the house of the county sheriff. There she is constantly sexually harassed by him and treated with contempt by his wife. Agnes falls in love with Natan, a self taught homoeopathic doctor. The sheriff takes revenge on Natan by making it illegal for him to practice his profession. The dramatic relationship between the three main characters ultimately leads to a fatal web of events where a love affair turns into a nightmare of brutality and destruction.

Quiet, mysterious, the woman is an artist on the way to Meðalland to sketch. Always ready to take advantage of an opportunity, the young man adjusts his itinerary to help the beautiful artist, and with luck, he thinks, help himself add another notch to his sexual belt. But all is not what it seems in this world. Renowned photographer, Larus, returns to Iceland to attend the funeral of his mother. With him is his wife Rose, twenty years his junior. With his homecoming, Larus begins to reminisce on his childhood, and becomes distant from his wife. Soon she begins to realize that not everything is as it should be.

A middle aged worker does all he can to provide his wife and daughter with good living conditions. They are ungrateful and do not return his affections. When he has an accident at work and goes home in the afternoon, he finds the time to think about how to solve the communication problems in his family. This takes however an unforeseen route.
