Set in the 1930s, a former veterinary student takes a job in a travelling circus and falls in love with the ringmaster's wife. Jacob's life takes a turn when he jumps on a passing train and ends up in a circus. He becomes the vet for the circus animals and develops a complicated relationship with Marlena, the ringmaster's wife. As the circus faces challenges, Jacob and Marlena fall in love and decide to run away together. However, their plans are foiled when August, the ringmaster, discovers their plan and violently separates them. In the chaos that follows, Jacob and Marlena's love triumphs as they find each other and escape with Rosie the elephant. They continue to work in the circus, get married, and have a family together. Years later, Jacob recounts his story, revealing the lasting impact the circus had on his life.
