Marie, a professor of English literature, goes on vacation with her husband Jean to a beach. One day, Jean goes missing and Marie struggles with grief, sadness, and denial. She refuses to accept that he is gone and continues to live her life as if he is still there. She forms a close friendship with Vincent, a publisher, who helps her cope with her husband's absence. Marie goes through various experiences and encounters, including sunbathing, swimming, and taking the subway. Despite the search efforts and Jean being declared legally dead, Marie refuses to move on and remains in denial.
