In 14th-century France, knight Jean de Carrouges must settle a dispute over his wife Marguerite by challenging his former friend Jacques Le Gris to a duel to the death. Jean and Jacques swear fealty to Count Pierre d'Alençon, but tensions arise when Jacques receives a gift of land that Jean believes should be his. Jacques falls in love with Marguerite and rapes her, leading Jean to seek justice through a duel. The duel takes place, and Jean emerges victorious. However, he meets a tragic end in the Crusades. Marguerite continues managing his estate and lives in peace for the rest of her life.
