In turn-of-the-century Vienna, a magician named Eisenheim falls in love with Sophie, a noblewoman above his social class. They are separated, but Eisenheim perfects his magic and returns as a master illusionist. He and Sophie reunite, but their love is threatened by the ruthless Crown Prince Leopold, who intends to marry Sophie and stage a coup. Sophie is eventually murdered, and Eisenheim seeks revenge by exposing Leopold during his magic show. Eisenheim is arrested but disappears during his arrest. Inspector Uhl, who has been observing Eisenheim, discovers evidence linking Leopold to Sophie's murder. Leopold commits suicide, and Eisenheim escapes. Uhl later realizes that Eisenheim faked Sophie's death and framed Leopold. Eisenheim is reunited with Sophie, and they live together happily.
