A disillusioned college graduate, Benjamin Braddock, finds himself torn between his older lover, Mrs. Robinson, and her daughter, Elaine. Benjamin is unsure about his future and spends his time lounging around and sleeping with Mrs. Robinson. However, he begins to develop feelings for Elaine and is forced to date her by their parents. Benjamin tries to ensure their date is a disaster, but ends up realizing that he is comfortable with Elaine and can talk to her about his worries. Their relationship falls apart when Mrs. Robinson threatens to reveal their affair, leading Benjamin to confess to Elaine. She becomes upset and returns to Berkeley, while Benjamin decides to marry her and follows her there. Benjamin ultimately reunites with Elaine, but their relationship faces opposition from her father. They escape their wedding and run away together, but the final shot suggests an uncertain future for them.
